Do Words Count?

by Maggie on June 9, 2009

Many people believe that if you drive enough traffic to your website, then sales conversion will happen automatically. WRONG! If it were all of us would be much better off with huge $$ in the bank.

As well as traffic you need to have good “Words” on the page for people to read. Yes, Good “Copy” and unfortunately a huge percentage of people run the other way then this is mentioned, they just do not want to know.

Justin Brooke from Sitefling.com fame says the following 7 things are needed to make up your copy.

1. You must know the common problems your target audience is having.

2. You must explain how your product solves that specific problem

3. You must use the same language that they would be using internally. So no salesy cheese or fancy words. Just straight talk as if you were friends at the bar with a couple drinks in you.

4. You must show undeniable proof that your claim is true

5. You must, without a doubt, appear as if you were exactly like they are – You had the same problems, tools, and experiences

6. You must make sure the value of your offer largely outweighs the price to the point they are almost shocked at the low price. It must be a “no brainer” to make the purchase

7. You must convince them to take action immediately through a very real reason for urgency

That is fantastic advice and Justin has a great conversion rate.

Add those to 7 points to your list of tools, however, I also believe that everyone who is in looking to make a success of their business needs to start to build a library of good books on Copywriting, so you truly understand the theory behind it. Without that understanding firmly entrenched in your mind, your sales copy will continue to be on “Weak”.

Of course you can outsource and get others to write your copy. A very expensive process for a “Good” Copywriter, however, if you do not have a basic understanding of copywriting, how on earth would you know if the expensive copywriter has written you a good piece?

Here are a few books below, guaranteed to help you understand the “Mystery” behind solid copy guaranteed to produce “Explosive” sales and I assure you are on my library shelf, dog eared and book marked a testimony to my reading and re-reading to extract every bit of “Technique” and put into play in my copy!

Until Next time,

I Cheer You On

Great post Maggie! Justin’s steps are spot on.

I have read “The Adweek Copywriting Handbook” numerous times. I’ll have to add the other 2 to my list of books to read.

Hi Maggie,
Great post ! :) Words really do count and I agree that it is important to understand a bit about copywriting. I peronally take note of every email that grabs my eye in my inbox. Then I try to modify it when I need to write a headline that needs to attract attention. Keep it up!
