What is irritating about Twitter?

by Maggie on June 7, 2009

I am sure the old saying “the more things change, the more they stay the same” not only comes from the last 100 years, I bet if you got into the “way, way back machine” if there was one, it probably would come from when man first started walking on this earth! How true this saying is though, especially when trying to procure and cultivate new business.

As you all know Twitter is the in thing and is the latest buzz and has been for a while in “Social Media” land. The more Twitter is used by people who run businesses the potential for misuse in terms of “positive and productive” business building becomes greater and greater. I say this because of personal observation and pet hate of when someone connects they pitch there product or service straight away! ARGHHH!

No relationship-building; no focusing on the other party, no taking time to identify want, need or desire; no respecting the process, just pitching what they want to sell. What are the odds for short and long term success? Very slim!

This is like going to function or a party and walking up to someone without a proper getting to know you, etc and trying to sell them life insurance!

Never forget the rules people will do business with, and refer business to, those people they know, like and trust and people who have THEIR best interests at heart!

This doesn’t happen and NEVER WILL HAPPEN as a result of being pitched but as a result of knowing the other person has their best interests in mind.

It is all about relationship building and YOU constantly asking how can I provide value – real value – to the relationship, and effectively communicating your desire to do so. Then and only then will sales and referrals happen.

Until Next Time,

I cheer you On!

Maggie

You’re right about not taking time for relationships but just pitching our product. It seems as if people just don’t have the time now and are in a hurry to make a buck. I haven’t had a Twitter long, just to keep track of my kids, but I feel as if I am building relationships with the people in the 30DAC and I really like that. I think we do all want to promote our sites, but in this group, we also want to promote the sites and products of those we’ve made a connection with.

Hi Yvonne,
thanks for your comment. You are right about the 30DAC participants building a relationship with each other, I feel that will carry on through and will only help us all reach our goals. Twitter is an awesome tool and if you do build correct relationships, and people see you helping them by retweeting, visiting their blog etc, they will reciprocate.

Love and Light
Maggie

The fast paced age we live in is very demanding. People seem to be in a hurry to succeed in their venture. However they don’t realize that only when they succeed then the pace picks up in their business. So one must build on a relationship first and make business stronger. Once that is done, one would receive a request upfront for your business pitch.

I don’t think anybody would love to get DMs about strangers pushing their sales right in front of our faces. I’m ok with them tweeting out load whatever they feel like it (as I could always unfollow them); problem with DMs is that we use it for private conversations, usually for inquires, explanations, or etc subjects between tweeters. Well, at least Twitter is allowing ‘block/spamming report buttons’, that’s a start. ^^

I hate auto DMs. They are grossly missused and have become an abomination.

It does drive me nuts also when people don’t even pretend to engage in conversation. It’s a full out sales job. I love 30dac and I’m excited to see everyones progress.
