When to Write A Press Release

by Maggie on June 17, 2009

So when do I write a Press Release?

Hmmm Very good question, you start now!

How many do I write? Simple answer you just cannot write enough of them! You should write a Press Release anytime and every time you have news, information and anything you wish to bring to the attention your existing and potential customers and clients.

Also, if you were going to put anything up on your website or blog that is of interest then it deserves a press release.

The following are all excellent reasons why you’d send a press release:

You have added a new product or service to your business

You helped a client or made a client money (case studies are fabulous)

You or Your business has won an award or recognized

See where I am going here, if you dig deep you will see just how many things you find to put into a press release.

You honestly need to have a mindset that press releases must be written as part of your promotion and on a regular basis.

Another thing you can do with the press release for extra promotion is what I do for all mine including my articles and that is make a quick podcast and submit that plus add the podcast audio to a power point slide presentation based on what is in your press release and submit it to all video directories – however, more on that later.

So how do you write one? Not like they were years ago! Think about you target audience, it is going to be wide and varied. Talk in everyday language (no esoteric jargon please) and make sure it is constructed properly with who, what, when, where, why, and how. If you follow that you cannot go wrong.

Another thing to keep in mind is the length – around 400-500 words the same as a short Article. Precise, well written with extreme focus on the content is a must, no shorter because you need enough words to cover your message in the content, no longer because you risk losing the attention of the reader.

Getting Noticed: Make your press release different from others by providing a small media kit – and by that I mean submit it with a package of information about your business, thus making it easy for others to publish your story by doing some of their work for them.

You must not forget to provde your name, your website (Yes some people do this!), your day & night phone number not forgetting your mobile and your email address plus a secondary email address if you have one.
